1209770991|Jake|.: Grand Theft Auto IV Review :.|
Just my impressions and opinions on GTA IV, hope you enjoy.|
The wait is finally over and GTA IV has been released, and the wait was well worth it. It takes everything that made the previous titles so good and has increased them ten fold while adding entirely new features as well, creating an immersive and addictive game.
The player takes control of Niko Belic, who has come to Liberty City in search of the American dream, which his cousin Roman assures him he has. What Niko found however is harsh and brutal city thriving with violence and carnage, in which he must survive in by rising to the top by doing whatever it takes.
The game has the entire classic GTA trademarks such as the car jacking, fast speed car chases, shoot outs and the crazy civilians, but what makes IV stand out from the rest is the realism. Liberty City feels like a city. The pedestrians go about their daily business, meeting friends, answering there phones, shouting abuse to one another, and the city itself looks "lived in". The people react to how you act, push past them and they will shout abuse at you, pull out a gun and start shooting the place up and they will flee, call the cops or take cover.
This in depth city makes the game so much more enjoyable, and the smooth control's help to. There your pretty standard third person shooter configuration but the newly added cover system really changes GTA. Gone are the days off standing in the middle of the street and firing away. Players will have to take cover, and maneuver between it in order to successfully survive shoot outs. Its a lot easy to die this time around, and while the "run and gun" tactic is available; you'll most certainly be killed pretty quick.
Of course, vehicles are back and you will notice a vast improvement over them from the previous GTA's. Cars handle a lot more realistically and good driving is a necessity to make it through most of the missions. Each car has its own feel and doesn’t just feel like a different skin and the same box. Cars are more detailed, truly representing there makes and most likely handling like them to. There’s nothing quite like racing through Liberty City full speed with your friends while being chased down by the police, which leads me to the defining aspect of GTA IV, the multiplayer.
The whole of Liberty City is open to you and 16 friends in over 15 different game types. I haven’t played all of the multiplayer modes so far, but i must say the cop's and crook's was defiantly the most entertaining. There are two teams, the crooks goal is for them to get a randomly selected player titled "the boss" to a getaway vehicle on the map, while the cop’s goal is to stop this from happening. The game play is frantic and furious and like I mentioned earlier, the feeling of speeding through the streets while taking out enemy players is great. The fact the entire of Liberty City is open for you to explore online is great, and although I have experienced some lag, it was nothing to make me think any less of this game.
In my opinion, IV is a must buy for fans of the series and anyone that owns a Xbox 360 or PS3. It really raises the bar for free roaming games and for gaming in general. Not to be missed out.||3||

This map is based on the Iraqi TV station mission, from the single player campaign mode. It has been expanded on, giving players a much greater and more challenging environment.
CREEK
Completely new, this map is not featured in the single player campaign. It is however designed to look as if it is. This map looks as if it is going to be really great!
CHINATOWN
Chinatown is based on an older map, just refined and edited to fit the 360 and PS3's capability. It is not featured in the single player campaign. This looks like quite a simple map, with a few streets and surrounding buildings.
KILLHOUSE
This map is based in a warehouse, with boxes and walls as obstacles. This map was also not featured in the single player campaign mode. It will be a massive change from the current maps, with a strange name to go with it.
We are all looking forward to this release, and they should be available some time in the next few months.||13||

“We’ve made the decision to move Battlefield: Bad Company and Mercenaries 2 into fiscal 2009,” said John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts. “Both titles are looking great, and we believe with additional polish, we will build a better consumer experience and thereby maximize our economics.”

However, they claim that an Xbox 360 version of Crysis isn't in development due to technical reasons.
Even before the PC version released, rumours of a PS3 conversion of the stunning Crysis (developed by Far Cry creators Crytek) were rife, and not far off the mark if insiders at the studio are to be believed. The game looks to be a port of the PC original plus some extra modes and features, a kind of Crysis 1.5. Like the PC game you can expect a visual powerhouse; an open-world shooter that begins on a beautiful tropical island before things take a turn for the worse and aliens from a parallel world stake a claim on Earth. Only the mighty Killzone 2 could possibly hold a candle to this shooter. For technical reasons we hear an Xbox 360 version of Crysis isn’t in development. Bet you’re glad you bought a PS3 now, eh? The man behind the PS3 updates says they are trying to cut down on the amount of times they release a firmware updates. He also said plans are underway to make updating easier and faster and they will probably be rolled out next year.

Multiplayer: There’ve been a lot of PlayStation 3 firmware upgrades] and it’s certainly improved the machine. I can’t say that I love every time I turn my system on — well not every time I turn my system on — but when I turned my system on last night to check something needed an upgrade already. I just got 2.0.
Lempel: Right. Right. We’re trying to certainly cut down on the amount of times we do it. But on occasion when we’ve got these good features ready to go, let’s give them out to the consumers. Let’s get them out there. We definitely understand that it does happen frequently and that can be somewhat annoying to some users.
Read on for our full exchange.
Multiplayer: I was wondering if this whole PSP PC store was just a way for you to be able to write a blog post that didn’t involve firmware upgrades.
Eric Lempel, Director of PlayStation Network Operations: [laughs] That was a way so that somebody couldn’t say to me ‘we want the in-game XMB.’ Or that I could just put one out and not hear that.[Editor’s Note: At this point we talked about firmware for a bit, which I’ll cover in a future post]
Lempel: We hear you. We hear everyone. Yeah. There’s some challenges, but we definitely hear you.
Multiplayer: How many more firmware upgrades are we getting this year, Eric?
Lempel: Oh, let’s see.
Multiplayer: Where are we now? We have a month to go?
Lempel: You might see a couple more this year that will have some cool features. I’ll just say that. We’re hoping to release a couple more and maybe by a couple, one for each platform that will have some good features, some good stuff that hopefully people will enjoy. [NOTE: This interview took place on November 29, the day a new PSP firmware update was issued.]
Multiplayer: I kid you not, I’m considering in one of my Year-End things maybe a run-down of all of the firmware upgrades on the PS3.
Lempel: I think that would be great.
Multiplayer: There’ve been a lot and it’s certainly improved the machine.
Multiplayer: The servers do seem to be getting faster. I’ve noticed that. My downloads of those firmware upgrades do seem to be speeding up.
Lempel: Yeah, and the process has been improved a bit. People may not have noticed this, but if you look at the process under a microscope you no longer have to hook up the controller to the PS3. Little things like that to make it easier and faster. We’ll continue to work on other ways of making it easier and faster and we’ll probably roll those out some time next year.

Microsoft is making it even easier to expand your Friends network on Xbox LIVE®, starting with the Fall Dashboard Update on December 4. You'll be able to check out the friends lists of fellow Xbox LIVE members right from the Dashboard. With this new feature, members can find old friends or connect with new ones within the community of more than eight million people on Xbox LIVE around the globe and send messages and game invites, as well as compare games and Achievements.
With the prevalence of social media websites such as MySpace and FaceBook, this type of capability has largely come to be expected from consumers as a means to relate in an online community. Xbox LIVE continually seeks new ways to better serve the expectations of its members, which often result in free enhancements made available through the bi-annual Dashboard updates.
Friends List Settings When the Fall Dashboard update is distributed on December 4, the new default setting on Xbox LIVE will be active, enabling members to see the Friends lists of other Xbox LIVE members. If you'd like to keep your friends list private, you can take the following steps to change your settings beginning today:
Log in to www.xbox.com/fof and select one of the three options available for your Gamertag:
* Everyone (only available to members 18 and older) * Friends only (available to members 13 and older) * Blocked (available to all members, and automatic for anyone under the age of 13)

BioWare's sci-fi epic evolutionises the role-playing genre and delivers a game world as rich and detailed as anything George Lucas has dreamt up. by Hayden Vaughn, IGN UK
UK, November 19, 2007 - The term role-playing game is probably one of the most abused in gaming. Many so-called RPGs simply don't allow the player to properly embrace the character they're playing. That's one of the reasons sci-fi role-player Mass Effect is so refreshing: it goes some significant way toward making you actually - you know - play a role, rather than flapping behind a thin veil of hammy dialogue and redundant decision-making.
Take Mass Effect's much-touted conversation system for instance: whenever you engage another character, the game hits you with options so wide-ranging and subtle you soon break out of standard game practice - selecting a perfunctory response to progress things as quickly as possible - and start to build a genuine personality for your character.

As an example, within 10 minutes of playing, we were choosing dialogue to fit my guy's face - and the background I had chosen for him, where he was the survivor of a terrible accident in space, one of three options you get at the start. He was curt, no nonsense, a bit blunt, but basically a good guy. Navigating the trees of dialogue here is so deep, so complex you can genuinely shape the game's hero, galactic defender Commander Shepard, into a person. It's a gradual process, but over time it reaffirms your faith in the power of games to tell stories.
In fact the way the dialogue is blended into the game itself is nothing short of sensational. Mass Effect is about a third talking, a third action, a third leveling, making items and skilling up your characters, but the game's structured so carefully you never get a chance to get bored of one bit of it. All the areas of the game overlap - skill up your character's Charm ability, and you can influence conversations; mess up a chat and you're in a firefight.
It's slower paced than most games too, but that's not necessarily a bad thing and it keeps up with much pacier rivals in the crucial area of keeping you rooted to your sofa for hours. Remember, this is from BioWare, creators of the excellent Knights of the Old Republic, and in terms of gameplay Mass Effect doesn't radically shift away from the KOTOR formula of incremental upgrades, item collecting and harvesting, and fantastically complex skill systems. But it's still more than KOTOR; it's KOTOR with a serious adrenalin boost.
Battles are real-time and look pretty tasty, with some neat outdoor skirmishes across moonscapes and shootouts through space stations. Enemies move fast and thankfully your team-mates are pretty smart at staying in behind cover, otherwise it would be rock hard. The first time you get jumped by a Husk - a hideous, drained alien victim who runs up to your team and damages the living daylights out of you - is genuinely scary. When both your team-mates have been downed - you can revive them after fights - and you have to take on three evil roboot Geth with a shotgun, it really is properly white-knuckle. Indeed, this does adrenalin better than 99 per cent of RPGs.
That said, it doesn't pay to fall asleep at the wheel when it comes to skill points, weapon upgrades and other RPG staples. Right from the start you're backed up by two characters (you can swap them later) and have to command your team-mates in battle, and also pay attention to doling out equipment and skills to balance up shooting and 'biotic' - read: magic - abilities. It looks like a third-person shooter - the heavy use of cover gives it a distinct flavour of Gears of War - but even when you're popping headshots at Geth you have to keep an eye on skill points, damage points, armour and the like or you're toast. Even picking between several identical-looking shotguns can be the difference between life and death.
The targeting system and AI are good but sheer aiming skills alone won't get you through - kills only occur when you've got a red lock-on symbol, basically - and your RPG-style team management skills become the most important thing. Even in the biggest fights you'll be doing RPG-style things like accessing big menus of skills every two or three seconds. That's not to say that the combat isn't exciting - it is. It's just that it's RPG exciting, not FPS exciting.
As is traditional with RPGs, Mass Effect is a big game. Simply because the plot's so much better-written than most RPGs you do tend to stick to the main storyline more, but there's a lot to look at and a lot of people to talk to out there. That said, the universe of Mass Effect isn't fluid - inside space stations, you'll have several distinct locations to visit but won't be able to visit anywhere else. In the places you go you're also shepherded towards people who have something to say pretty efficiently, which cuts down on KOTOR's occasional moments where you'd simply talk to every single person you saw until something happened.
In space, likewise, you pick planets you can visit off a galaxy map - a lot of planets, sensibly enough, have environments so hostile you can't touch down - then visit five or six places of interest on them, usually scoring a side quest, a fight, and maybe an item upgrade as you do so. But it's stuck together well enough that it feels huge. In fact the first time you jet out of a space station and realise you can set the navigation controls for dozens of planets you do think, 'Wow, I'm in space.'
It's that sort of 'Wow' that is Mass Effect's big sell. No game has done playable dialogue better than this. No RPG has blended action and stats like this. No space exploration game has given you such an astounding, detailed galaxy to explore. No game has ever delivered this sort of rich, nuanced plot and made you feel so much a part of it. And the best part? This huge, multi-ending epic is just the first part of a trilogy. The only possible response to that is, 'Wow'.
Closing Comments
Mass Effect is a giant leap forward for videogames in terms of storytelling and it’s probably the biggest, most sophisticated game on Xbox 360. But with combat requiring you to dip into menus every few seconds, it isn’t likely to win over the Halo brigade - and with this much dialogue, it’s not going to be your bag if you’re the guy who hits ‘start’ every second in an effort to get characters to stop talking.

He says he has played the game and his thoughts can not be posted up until Tuesday.

Back at E3, Sony spent a lot of time hyping up two big third party PS3 exclusives for this fall: Unreal Tournament III and Haze. Unreal Tournament 3 has slipped into 2008 according to Midway (or late December according to Epic), so that begs the question: What about Haze? At one point it was set for release in November, but now EB Games is reporting a launch in early December, with a December 4th release date. Sources close to Ubisoft tell me that the game is indeed coming this year (although I'm hearing December 11th), so it looks like Sony will at least get one third party exclusive out the door. Still, I bet the house that Ken Kutaragi built is kicking itself that it didn't lock up Assassin's Creed as a PS3 exclusive, especially with early review scores like a 9.5 from Game Informer. (I've played the game but my thoughts can't be posted until Tuesday morning).

Call of Duty 4 reviews * Official Xbox Magazine 100% - "Simply put, Call of Duty 4 does everything right and nearly nothing wrong. But where it elevates itself above even the best 360 shooters is how all of the good stuff is ludicrously good. The campaign never lets up, while multiplayer is a triple-A affair in itself. [Dec 2007, p.36]"
* GamePro 100% - "I seriously cannot think of a single flaw in CoD4, and trust me, I looked for them. From the amazing graphics to the intense and compelling single-player campaign to the feature loaded and addictive multiplayer, this game has it all."
* IGN 94% - "Though the single-player lacks length, the multiplayer should keep you invested in COD4 for the long winter. This is a truly fantastic multiplayer offering that's as deep as any other online game available."

Enterprising gamers have come up with a way to squeeze all sorts of new and destructive fun out of the Crysis demo by tossing in the game's entire arsenal of weapons and vehicles.
A report on Rock, Paper, Shotgun explains how gamers are continuing to hack the demo, and that the most recent result of those efforts is a new map generated from material found later in the game. The map includes not only guns and explosives, but also tanks, boats and even helicopters, plus an appearance from one of the game's mysterious alien bad guys.
In order to take advantage of this, the new map must be downloaded and extracted into the game. Starting a new game will lead players on the same path as the original demo, up to the discovery of your tree-bound (and well-gutted) associate; soon after that point, however, players will come across a table of equipment as well as the alien enemy, and just past that, the guns and vehicles.
The new map may spoil parts of the game, and all original files should be backed up as adding the new map will render the normal demo unplayable. More information, including detailed instructions and links to the necessary files, are available here.

Epic Games has announced that the Unreal Tournament 3 beta demo is close to release, and should be available to gamers later this month. In a post on the official Unreal Tournament 3 forum, company vice president Mark Rein wrote, "Just wanted to give you a heads up that we're getting pretty close to releasing the Unreal Tournament 3 Beta Demo for Windows. The Beta Demo will allow instant action play against bots as well as online multiplayer. The purpose of the Beta Demo is to test the game on a large variety of hardware configurations and get gameplay feedback from the community. The development team feels they're pretty close to being ready to release this so it could come out this week but for safety sake I'd say it should be out within two weeks."
Unreal Tournament 3 is actually the fourth installment in the series, following Unreal Tournament, UT2003 and UT2004, but is named for its use of the third-generation of the Unreal Engine. The PC version of the game is scheduled for a November launch, but Midway Games recently announced a delay in the PlayStation 3 release, which has now been pushed back to the first quarter of 2008.|||9||

With the conclusion of the Halo trilogy, the Bungie team has expressed a desire to move on to new and original IPs; Microsoft, which owns the Halo IP, is expected to continue the franchise through other development teams.
"Our collaboration with Bungie has resulted in Halo becoming an enduring mainstream hit," said Microsoft Game Studios Vice President Shane Kim. "While we are supporting Bungie's desire to return to its independent roots, we will continue to invest in our Halo entertainment property with Bungie and other partners, such as Peter Jackson, on a new interactive series set in the Halo universe. We look forward to great success with Bungie as our long-term relationship continues to evolve through Halo-related titles and new IP created by Bungie."
Harold Ryan, Bungie studio head, added, "This exciting evolution of our relationship with Microsoft will enable us to expand both creatively and organizationally in our mission to create world-class games. We will continue to develop with our primary focus on Microsoft platforms; we greatly value our mutually prosperous relationship with our publisher, Microsoft Game Studios; and we look forward to continuing that affiliation through Halo and beyond."
Bungie Studios was founded in 1991 and acquired by Microsoft in 2000. Although best known for the Halo franchise, the studio is also responsible for the Myth RTS series, Oni and the critically-acclaimed Marathon Trilogy for the Macintosh. Launched on September 25, Halo 3 earned over $300 million in its first week of release in the U.S. alone, smashing several sales records along the way. Retailers have also reported a significant jump in Xbox 360 sales since the game hit the shelves, more than doubling the weekly average prior to the game's debut.||1||

"Halo 3 embodies our vision for the future of entertainment, where some of the world's greatest creative minds will deliver a new generation of interactive storytelling."
Retailers are also reporting that worldwide console sales have more than doubled their weekly average prior to the Halo 3 launch. |A group of hardcore gamers managed to procure copies of Halo 3, and then proceeded to play the unreleased game online. After Microsoft discovered the players, they were banned from Xbox Live until the year 9999.
The gamers were discovered by bloggers on the official Xbox forums, where they were complaining about having their consoles banned from accessing the Xbox Live feature. Towards the beginning of the thread, one of the posters who was wondering why he was banned ended up answering his own question (all grammatical errors are sic the author):
"Do you think they would ban my console because I played halo 3 epsilon yesterday?" wrote "dak Is bak." Another poster named "Scar" who was in a similar predicament, agreed with his theory, writing, "i also played the epsilon yesterday... so thats probably it... is your live account suspended till 9999 also like mine?"
The gamers accessed the Halo 3 multiplayer build, codenamed Epsilon, through a unnamed Microsoft employee, who apparently gave her son an access code to the game. The gamers convinced the lad to give them his account recovery information, in exchange for a phony Project Gotham Racing 4 download code. He obliged and soon the gamers were running his account on each of their consoles, playing Halo 3 weeks before its release, until Microsoft noticed the leak and permanently banned the offending consoles.
Screenshots taken by the Halo bandits have surfaced, as well as video of the gameplay. One writer summarized the events and subsequent fallout, saying, "Halo 3 is just too big to be contained."
The gamer who perpetrated the hack goes by "CaptBansheeKiller," and corresponded via email with The Escapist. He's angry at Microsoft and can't understand their punitive actions in the context.

1187895327|Jaybuz|Boy Fries Himself with Hot Hot Xbox 360|Dumb, dumb, dumb. Apparently, a 14 year-old North Carolina boy was almost killed trying to keep his Xbox 360 from overheating. According to local news, the boy's mother found her son unconscious after he attempted to submerge the console in a pan of water. "When I left to go next door he was playing a game but when I got back he was laying on his back on the floor and unconscious," she said. The console, wrapped in plastic and tape, was still plugged in.
The kid has read online that he could keep his 360 from over heating by cooling its power supply. By the time the ambulance showed up, the boy had regained consciousness. Thankfully, when the ambulance arrived, the boy had regained his senses. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and suffered small burns on his hand and foot.
Kids remember: No matter what the internet says, electricity and water are NOT friends. They're not even on speaking terms.|||4||

Bioshock is gonna be so awesome it is suppose to be the best FPS for 2008, here are some details.
BioShock is a revolution in the shooter genre that will forever change the expectations for the FPS. Going beyond "run and gun corridors," "monster-closet AIs" and static worlds, BioShock creates a living, unique and unpredictable FPS experience. BioShock is the Shooter 2.0.
After your plane crashes into icy uncharted waters, you discover a rusted bathysphere and descend into Rapture, a city hidden beneath the sea. Constructed as an idealistic society for a hand picked group of scientists, artists and industrialists, the idealism is no more. Now the city is littered with corpses, wildly powerful guardians roam the corridors as little girls loot the dead, and genetically mutated citizens ambush you at every turn.
Special Features

Take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, commandeering security turrets and crafting unique items critical to your very survival.
Upgrade your weapons with ionic gels, explosives and toxins to customize them to the enemy and environment.
Genetically modify your body through dozens of Plasmid Stations scattered throughout the city, empowering you with fantastic and often grotesque abilities.
Explore a living world powered by Ecological A.I., where the inhabitants have interesting and consequential relationships with one another that impact your gameplay experience.
Experience truly next generation graphics that vividly illustrate the forlorn art deco city, highlighted by the most detailed and realistic water effects ever developed in a video game.
Make meaningful choices and mature decisions, ultimately culminating in the grand question: do you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture... or save them?

I got Vegas yesterday, after hearing it was a pretty neat game on reviews and that, I gotta say it really is. Starting with two game modes 'normal' and 'realistic' I chose normal because realistic didn't really make sense, if it's realistic it could be either hard or easy depending on your enemy's skill I suppose but they must mean realistic as in very hard. I'm no good at following storys but to me it seems as if theres some drugs and money theft with a load of Mexicans and no you dont start off at Vegas as its mexicans your hunting its Mexico where you start, then later you go to Vegas where all the close combat action is.
I really like the combat in the game though, it's all very realistic as every shot you make has to be in cover else you'll get shot, the cover system is very sweet as you can hide behind almost anything "hide-able" and shoot any way you want to whilst there. After every level you get to re-kit in a mini armory crate, the weapons are all the modern ones and fully customizable with scopes, lasers, iron-sights, flash bangs ect and over 50 weapons I think.
Everything in the game is ace with yourself yet there is downers with your team mates, they will co-operate in taking cover and that but sometimes when you order them to go somewhere or follow you they will just blatenly stand in the middle of the road and get shot at, though there is very good things you can do with your team like order them to stand next to a door then press either "V, B or N" - V to blow up the door n clear the area, B to flash the area then clear and N just to barge in and clear.
The graphics are VERY impressive and my Nvidia Fatal1ty 8600GT plays all settings on highest very smooth and looks VERY realistic, with a nice frame rate to go with it.
Over all its a great game, very tactical as all Clancy's games are I would say a 89 out of 100 - A great tactical shooter.
